Seminar Numerical Methods for Earthquake and Tsunami Simulation

Announcements

The first seminar session (kickoff session) will be on Tuesday, Apr 19, 16.00 in seminar room MI 02.07.023.

In this session, we will finalize the assignment of seminar topics, and discuss the requirements for presentations, handouts, etc.

Topics

The seminar will deal with models, analytic solutions and numerical methods required for the simulation of earthquakes and tsunamis.

Topics (supervisors) are as follows:

  • Model equations and analytical solutions
    • Earthquakes and elastic waves (AB): Milos Maric
    • Nonlinear waves (OM): Carlos Pachajoa
    • Shallow Water Equations (KR): Benedikt Stegmaier
  • Fluxes and Riemann-Solvers
    • Godunov/Roe solvers (AB): Dmitry Pinaev
    • F-wave solver (OM): Arash Bakhtiari
  • Towards a full tsunami model
    • 2D/3D equations (OM): Teng Wang
    • Source terms / well-balanced scheme (AB): Weiwei Wang
    • Inundation (OM): Ao Mo-Hellenbrand
  • Higher-order numerical methods
    • Discontinuous Galerkin (basics: weak forms, basis functions) (OM): Aditya Ghantasala
    • ADER-DG (OM): Ran Sui
    • Discontinuous Galerkin (applications: SWE, earthquakes) (AB): Qingguang Xie
