== Introduction ==

In various chemical engineering problems, the interaction of phenomena acting on different time and spatial scales has to be accomplished in order to account for all relevant physical effects. The translocation of sub-micron particles through nanopores or studies on polymer displacements in different flows are examples of current research on that field, involving effects on the molecular and the mesoscopic/continuum scales.

The focus of the present project lies on the development and analysis of coupling strategies combining two simulation codes that have been developed at the chair for scientific computing:

* MarDyn is a simulation code for molecular dynamics simulations (MD). It is based on a linked-cell algorithm and is meant for massive parallel MD simulation runs.

* A lattice Boltzmann (LB) solver for the simulation of fluid dynamics on the mesoscopic scale (that is between the molecular and the continuum scale) is developed inside the PDE framework Peano (see also [http://www5.in.tum.de/peano peano-homepage]).

== Summary of project steps ==
* Getting familiar with the basic concepts of the Peano framework (adapter concept etc.) and its lattice Boltzmann component
* Getting familiar with MarDyn
* Literature research on methods for MD-LB coupling
* Development of basic concept(s) for MD-LB coupling with respect to the codes MarDyn and Peano
* Implementation of simple-scenario coupling(s) of the two codes (or for this purpose equivalent shrinked versions of the codes), e.g. zero velocity flow field coupled to corresponding molecular simulations
* Checking the limitations of the coupling strategies

Due to the size of the project <i>Peano</i>, software-engineering aspects such as modularity, encapsulation of functionality or good documentation of the code are very important. This does not represent any inconvenients for students who are not yet familiar with these topics but it is a chance to learn and directly apply them.

== Einführung ==
In vielen Bereichen der Verfahrenstechnik spielt die Interaktion von physikalischen Phänomenen, die sich auf verschiedenen Raum- und Zeitskalen abspielen, eine entscheidende Rolle. Ein typisches Beispiel hierfür ist die Disposition von Nanopartikelchen in Strömungen, welche zum einen durch das makro- bzw. mesoskopische Strömungsverhalten verursacht wird, zum anderen jedoch auch durch Fluktuationen auf molekularer Ebene beeinflusst wird. Um die für die Physik relevanten Effekte einzufangen, müssen daher Methoden entwickelt werden, die die Brücke zwischen diesen verschiedenen Skalen schlagen.
Im Rahmen des vorliegenden Projekts sollen Kopplungsstrategien für hybride Molekulardynamik-Lattice Boltzmann Simulationen (MD-LB) entwickelt und untersucht werden. Hierfür soll eine Kopplung zweier bereits bestehender Codes näher beleuchtet werden:

* MarDyn ist ein massiv paralleler C++-Code zur Molekulardynamik-Simulation, basierend auf dem Linked-Cell Verfahren.

* Ein Lattice Boltzmann Löser zur Strömungssimulation auf mesoskopischer Skala (d.h. auf einer Skala, die sich zwischen den molekularen und den kontinuumsmechanischen Größen bewegt). Der Löser ist Teil des PDE-Frameworks Peano (siehe [http://www5.in.tum.de/peano/ Peano-Homepage], welcher am Lehrstuhl für Informatik mit Schwerpunkt Wissenschaftliches Rechnen entwickelt wurde.

== Zusammenfassung der Arbeitsschritte ==

* Einarbeitung in die grundlegenden Konzepte des Peano-Frameworks (Adapter-Konzept etc.) und die enthaltene Lattice Boltzmann Komponente
* Einarbeitung in den MD Code MarDyn
* Literaturrecherche zu Kopplungsmethoden für hybride MD-LB Simulationen
* Entwicklung eines Konzepts/ von Konzepten zur MD-LB Kopplung unter Berücksichtigung der Codes MarDyn und Peano
* Implementierung einer Kopplung beider Codes inklusive einfacher Testszenarios (unter Umständen basierend auf vereinfachten, reduzierten Versionen der beiden Codes)
* Betrachtung möglicher Beschränkungen der Kopplungsstrategien

Aufgrund der Projektgröße von <i>Peano</i> sind Software-Engineering-Aspekte wie Modularität, Kapselung der Funktionalität oder gute Dokumentation sehr wichtig. Für Studenten, die darin noch wenig Übung haben, ist das kein Nachteil sondern die Chance, die entsprechende Vorgehensweise an einem größeren Projekt kennenzulernen und direkt umzusetzen.

Gute Programmierkenntnisse in C++, Interesse an physikalischen Zusammenhängen und Multiskalen-Betrachtungen.

Wenn du bereits Kenntnisse zu Molekulardynamik oder Lattice Boltzmann Verfahren hast, ist das super! Wenn nicht, sollte das aber auch keinerlei Problem darstellen. :-)
