Fabian Güra: A Performance and Energy Study of the Hyperbolic PDE Solver Engine ExaHyPE
The ExaHyPE project prepares exascale performance for the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations. The current demonstrator combines adaptive mesh refinement for space-trees indexed with the Peano space-filling curve. This ensures a low memory-footprint and high efficiency. The numerical scheme is the Arbitrary High Order Derivative Discontinuous Galerkin method (ADER-DG) with finite-volume based a posteriori subcell limiting. The numerical kernels of the demonstrator are reformulated in a matrix product fashion and highly optimized towards computational performance. The objective of this thesis is the design and implementation of a profiling scheme for the computational kernels and a careful analysis concerning the relevant quantities such as energy consumption or FLOPS/s.
