Benjamin Peherstorfer: Reduced Basis Methods with Sparse Grids (Guided Research, Abschlussvortrag)

Reduced Basis (RB) methods have become increasingly popular for problems where PDEs have to be solved for varying parameters. More precisely, such problems are input-output relationships which means that for the evaluation of the output of interest a solution of a parametrized PDE is needed. The RB method can be employed to cope with such input-output relationships in the many-query or real-time context where it exploits two key opportunities: (i) the parameter domain can be approximated/substituted by a typically smooth and rather low-dimensional induced manifold, and (ii) the crucial costs are the asymptotic average costs per input-output evaluation and so we can accept greatly increased pre-processing costs.
