Maximilian Schmeller: Grid Projection for Simulations of Tsunami-Genesis
The data needed for accurate simulations of tsunami genesis is often not fully available and earthquake simulations have limited resources dedicated to writing outputs. This thesis investigates whether shallow-water equation (SWE) solvers can still produce accurate results when provided incomplete data and how this data can be augmented. For this investigation, we first propose a method of rasterizing the unstructured grid outputs of the earthquake simulator SeisSol in order to acquire the complete initial data needed for an SWE simulation in the right format. Then we subsequently remove variables of that data and evaluate the effects on the simulated tsunami. We show that these initial conditions only affect SWE simulations slightly but may be of much higher effect for other solver types.
