Julian Hohenadel: Development of an augmented reality sand-box for the demonstration of tsunami modeling

This is a Bachelor's Thesis submission talk advised by Carsten Uphoff and Leonard Rannabauer (will be held in German Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination)

Ever since the tsunami of 2004 caused the death of over 200.000 people [1] it is really important to raise awareness of how they behave and what makes them so dangerous. To visualize the simulation of different kinds of tsunamis in a more interactive way, an augmented reality sandbox is developed. This thesis aims to enable people to explore different scenarios of tsunamis. Based on the captured data from a Xbox 360 Kinect camera the depth levels of the sand are projected in the form of a height map. Areas under a certain threshold are filled with a water texture to be able to simulate the tsunamis. To enhance the effect of augmented reality, a good calibration of the projected image is necessary. The result is a simulation which can manually be calibrated on run time with a high accuracy.
