Bruno Miguel: A Distributed Actor Library for HPC Applications

This is a Master's thesis introduction talk. Bruno is advised by Alexander Pöppl.

An actor model is a conceptual programming model that abstracts the development of parallel applications. Its foundation is based on actors, whose states are independent and private from another actors. Actors communicate with each other through channels, and thus, the model essentially separates computational and communication logic. We analyze different implementations and architectures of an actor library. A shared memory implementation using UPC++, and a distributed memory implementation with MPI. Furthermore, we do performance evaluation against the Shallow Water Equations.
